Catenary Arc

Form Finding Study
2023
With the 50 x 50cm bounding box, our group created a systematic approach to generate double curvatures with 36 parallel chains. By placing the chains vertically at equal distances, we used 2 chains placed horizontally to mitigate the final form.

We were interested in the translation of curvature from plan to elevation. We separated the 36 chains with a variety of single curvatures, double curvatures, and intersecting curvatures.  The points of separation on the vertical chains were then connected to the points on the horizontal chains. Tow-dimensional curves are then translated to the third dimension in the three prototypes, forming different double curvatures on all sides.
